Poem by a Student

“My Wales”

Adam James

From the first war of Wales in 1277,
To a battle for healthcare, by Anuerin Bevan.
Like a true Prince of Wales – named Owain Glyndwr
Or combat in Africa – battling the Boer.

A Fight long continued to keep our land free,
By those who were loyal, their hearts did not flee.
For this Land of Our Father’s has kept hope alive,
Staying true to our heritage, our soldiers – they strive.

As red as our dragon, fields with poppies are lined,
To remember our Welshmen forever enshrined.
It is passion and honour that keeps Wales Strong,
Our Country’s foundations will last ever long.

Our moving Welsh anthem sung by choirs evermore,
“The land whose stern warriors were true to the core”
For a long time now, our heroes offered protection,
They showed knowledge, strength and also direction.

“Ymlaen!” Precious Welshmen, you are right to be proud,
Your actions protected the much-hallowed ground.
A ground where I’ll grow and inherit my freedom,
With weapons not drawn as you didn’t need them.

It’s more than just sheep and mines full of coal,
If you’ve been told it like that – it was told with no soul.
“My Wales” presents pride, growing strength by the hour,
To our own heroes, “My Wales” – I Say, “D’iolch yn Fawr.”

Colli laith

Well known singer Heather Jones was born in Cardiff and attended Cathays High. She sang a famous song called 'Colli Iaith' (Losing a Language) in 1971. The poet Harri Webb wrote the words to Colli Iaith and there was an item on the TV programme Pethe recently, as it's 40 years since the single 'Colli Iaith' was released. We arranged for Heather come to the school to film the item – enjoy it.

BBC News School Report In Progress

BBC Wales in Cardiff generously invited our students to share in their fun and professional demands by reporting the news on radio and TV on News Day, 21st March, 2013. They participated in making news stories they chose for being relevant and engaging, such as a report on ‘Women in ICT’ for Radio Wales and another on ‘Body Image’ for Wales Today.

We’ve put together just a few of the public opportunities our pupils enjoyed on the day. Please browse the news articles, radio and TV programs that appear below.

Dear Parents and Guardians

Cathays High is an 11-19 mixed comprehensive school serving the heart of Cardiff, maintained by the City and County of Cardiff Local Education Authority.
We are a successful school where our students show high levels of success academically at GCSE, AS, A Level and other examinations as well as a wide range of extra-curricular activities.

We have students of all abilities attending the school and we benefit from parental choice with around 45% of our students coming from outside the designated primary school catchment area. About 150 students enter year 7 each year and the vast majority continue with their education post-16. This gives us a thriving and lively sixth-form.

Major investments in computer technology as well as our sports facilities on the school site, at Maindy Stadium and Heath Park have extended provision and opportunities available for our students and the local community.

Cathays High benefits from a hard-working, well-qualified and dedicated team of teachers and support staff. We are proud to be a multi-ethnic and multi-cultural school and we are fortunate to have pleasant, conscientious students and very supportive parents.

As a school we aspire to high standards of excellence and standards from our students in all that they do. We aim to ensure that students feel happy and safe as school as they work towards their future academic and personal success. We value all our members equally, regardless of gender, colour, creed, ability, class, age or status.

Cathays High is first and foremost a place of work, but we believe our school is more than about academic success. It is about being part of a wider community; it is about giving and taking opportunities; it is about being involved in a wide range of extra-curricular activities that broaden educational experience; it is about preparing our students for life in the 21st Century.

I hope you will enjoy reading about Cathays High. There is always a warm welcome for you to visit us during the working day when we are happy to answer any questions you have. Please contact us to make an appointment to be shown around the school.

I look forward to meeting you.
